Cedar Daycare
Cedar Daycare is an inclusive centre focussed the development of the whole child. We nurture children’s self worth, their respect for others and their creative spirit. We believe they learn best through play, and with positive guidance. The children are engaged in free play for most of the day. Their experiences are overseen and enriched by the educators. They are supported in resolving their conflicts, and encouraged to come up with solutions on their own. We are inspired by the “Reggio Emilia” approach and philosophy. We are led by the interests and ideas of the group. We prioritize building the children’s autonomy and ability to help each other. Their ideas are valued and explored. We use the BC Early Learning Framework as a guide. We agree that “The role of the educator has shifted away from being a transmitter of knowledge toward being a collaborator who creates conditions so that children can invent, investigate, build theories and learn.” We honour and value the relationship between a parent and their child. We respect a family’s expertise when it comes to their child, and we believe that it is a privilege to be a
part of your family’s life. We encourage you to share your talents, ideas, traditions, books, recipes, music, etc. with us at the centre. We respect cultural differences and differences in opinions. As a team, it is our differences that makes us strong. Cedar is a non-profit society, and the board members who are involved in making our daycare a successful and happy home-away-from-home are typically parents of children enrolled at the centre. Cedar is an ever-evolving community collaboration. All children want love, acceptance, and a day filled with opportunities to learn and
have fun. The children at Cedar feel safe, comfortable and heard. We build our program with love, striving to support each child as an individual. Our routines in the classroom, in the playground, and in the nearby woodland provide a balance of independent and group learning, fine and gross motor skill activities, rest and physical activity. We are a child centred program, without a set curriculum; all areas of development are integrated in a spontaneous, organic way, and perhaps with more interest. (fine motor, gross motor, social, emotional, art, speech/vocabulary, numeracy, music, literacy, community etc.) We can spend minutes, or weeks on a single project, using inquisitive minds to build on ideas.
